Architizer's "NYC Worst Bathroom"
Client: Kenny Lao, Owner of Rickshaw Dumplings
Design Requirements:
--The bathroom needs to have a toilet, a sink, and shower.
The setup should look great, be space efficient, conserve water and energy as best as
possible.
--The toilet, while replaceable, needs to remain in its existing position
--Bounding walls are required to remain in current configuration.
Entry Concept
Dumplings are, at their heart, handmade comfort food. They are familiar, warming, fresh and satisfying to the soul. This is the basic concept for my rework of Kenny Lao’s Bathroom.
Keeping the room as open, yet as functional and flexible as possible, gives the space room to breathe. Warm tones and soft textures provide comfort. While the minimalist fixtures of pure white & chrome provides clean, crisp freshness. The Kirei and Bamboo woods at the built-ins add a bit of nature and spice.
Lighting is kept simple and thoughtful. The ceiling and drywall areas of the room are left clean & pale to reflect the light.
The paleness of the wall tiles along with the Shobi texture diffuse light, hide water marks and soap residue at the shower area. The modeled floor tiles will do the same.
The floor is warm modeled chocolate with a touch of gray, like stained concrete for both function and depth. Grout is to match providing a more monolithic feel. The floor will look clean, even when it’s dirty.
Both floor and wall tiles have a handmade quality about them, rather than machine processed.
The medicine cabinet can be wall mounted or partially recessed and provides much needed storage. An exterior open shelf as well as the top of box leaves space for display items.
At the wash basin, the Bar Sink style faucet has a higher throw for ease of drinking directly out of.
Robe hooks are provided for hanging anything, wet or dry.
The wall mounted hand mirror functions at both the shower and the wash basin.
